The winner of the other half of the $687.8 million Powerball jackpot has finally stepped forward to claim his prize. Robert Bailey, 67 from New York has been playing the same 6 numbers for over 25 years, and even now, after winning such a monumental prize he says that he has plans to continue playing too. Now, being the largest lottery winner in the history of New York, Bailey explained how it was he came to be in this situation. He purchased his ticket from a deli located in Harlem, which differs from what he usually does, as he usually visits a number of stores for his tickets, however on this particular day it was raining pretty bad so he popped into the deli to escape the bad weather, and purchased the Powerball ticket on a whim whilst there. Later that night, he checked the winning tickets and thought “These look like my numbers” which were: 8, 12, 13, 19, 27 and Powerball number 4 – the same numbers the woman from Iowa who won the other half of the prize chose. The most he’d ever won before was a $30,000 lucky Take Five ticket, which he’d won using those same numbers, but this time he couldn’t believe the amount he’d won and tried to watch some shows on his DVR to calm down. But the retired federal government employee disclosed that this didn’t work, as he was unable to sleep for the rest of the night. Bailey finally came forward to claim his $343.8 Million prize after he’d consulted a financial advisor as well as a lawyer, and will be taking a lump sum of $198 million following taxes. “It’s a good life change, I plan to do the right thing with the money” he says, and explained that he will spend the winnings on land, a home for his mother and investments in order to provide generational wealth for his family. Bailey also says he will be travelling to Las Vegas, and the Caribbean, however he also plans to give back to the community of Manhattan in some way as this is where he’s from and doesn’t want the money to change him.
